Before buying R22 refrigerant online, verify more than the product name and cylinder size. The listing, container label, Safety Data Sheet, quality documentation, and invoice should describe the same material and provide a traceable connection to the seller.
A sealed cylinder is useful evidence of packaging condition. An SDS explains the identified product and its hazards. A batch test report can support a quality claim. Each answers a different question, and none should be treated as a substitute for all the others.
For U.S. buyers maintaining older equipment, the strongest purchasing decision combines confirmed system compatibility, appropriate purchase eligibility, consistent product identification, and documentation that can be connected to the delivered cylinder.
First, Confirm That the Equipment Actually Requires R22
Start with the equipment nameplate and service history.
An older air conditioner may have originally used R22, but age alone does not establish its current refrigerant. A previous retrofit may have changed the refrigerant and introduced additional service labels.
Ask the servicing technician to confirm the required refrigerant before selecting a cylinder. If the original nameplate conflicts with a retrofit label or maintenance record, resolve that discrepancy first.
Similarly, a product described as an “R22 replacement” is not necessarily R22. It may be a different refrigerant intended for a specific, approved retrofit procedure.
Never purchase a substitute on the assumption that it can be mixed with the refrigerant already in the system.
Check Whether You Are Eligible to Purchase It
Online ordering does not remove refrigerant sales restrictions.
Under the EPA’s refrigerant sales restriction, purchases for stationary air-conditioning and refrigeration service generally require an appropriately Section 608-certified technician or an employer providing evidence that it employs one. Section 609 certification alone does not authorize purchasing refrigerant for stationary equipment.
There are other permitted transactions, including legitimate wholesale resale arrangements. Those exceptions should not be treated as a shortcut for a homeowner buying refrigerant for personal use.
If you are an uncertified homeowner, coordinate the purchase with the servicing contractor. Simply knowing someone with a certification card does not make that credential yours to use.
The EPA’s online-sales guidance states that online vendors have the same certification-verification and recordkeeping obligations as sellers conducting transactions in person.
Verify the Chemical Identity, Not Just the Search Title
R22 is chlorodifluoromethane, also called HCFC-22. Its CAS number is 75-45-6, and its chemical formula is CHClF₂, as identified in Chemours’ chlorodifluoromethane technical information.
Use those identifiers to check whether the listing and supplied documents refer to the same chemical.
Look for consistency among:
- The product name on the listing
- The refrigerant designation on the cylinder
- The product identifier in the SDS
- The chemical name and composition information
- The product description on the invoice
A heading containing “R22” is not enough if the description says “alternative,” “replacement blend,” or “hydrocarbon refrigerant.”
One especially important distinction is R22 versus products marketed as “22a.” The EPA’s safety guidance on products sold as R22a explains that these can be flammable hydrocarbon formulations and are not the same substance as R22.
Understand What “New,” “Virgin,” and “Reclaimed” Mean
Virgin R22
Virgin means the refrigerant has not previously been used. It does not mean it was manufactured recently.
For ordinary U.S. servicing supply, unused R22 can come from previously produced inventory. The EPA’s homeowner guidance explains that production and import of new R22 for servicing ended on January 1, 2020, while previously produced and reclaimed supplies remain available for existing equipment.
A listing advertising “new R22” should therefore make its meaning clear. Ask whether “new” describes unused refrigerant, a newly filled container, new packaging, or something else.
Those are different claims.
Reclaimed R22
Reclaimed refrigerant has been recovered and reprocessed to the applicable purity specifications, with the required analytical verification.
It should not automatically be dismissed as lower quality merely because it was previously used. What matters is whether reclamation and testing meet the applicable requirements.
According to the EPA’s refrigerant reclamation requirements, used refrigerant generally cannot be resold to a new owner for use as refrigerant unless an EPA-certified reclaimer has reclaimed it. The required purity specifications are in Appendix A to 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, based on AHRI Standard 700-2016.
If a seller describes a product as reclaimed, ask who reclaimed it and how the supplied batch is identified. The seller may be a distributor rather than the reclaimer itself.
Recovered or Recycled R22
“Recovered” describes removal from equipment. “Recycled” describes a cleaning process, but neither term alone establishes that the material has been reclaimed to the required specifications.
A listing that says “pulled from a working system” is not equivalent to documented reclaimed refrigerant offered for service use by a new owner.
Know What Each Document Can Establish
Different documents serve different purposes. A useful purchasing review checks whether they agree and whether their claims apply to the product being shipped.

These are purchasing checks. They should not be interpreted as a claim that every retail shipment must legally include a separate buyer-facing Certificate of Analysis.
Read the SDS Carefully
Begin with the product identifier, responsible company, and chemical composition.
OSHA’s SDS requirements identify Section 1 as the product-identification section and Section 3 as the section covering composition and chemical identifiers.
For an R22 purchase, ask:
- Does the product identifier correspond to the cylinder label?
- Does the document identify chlorodifluoromethane?
- Is the responsible manufacturer, importer, or other party identifiable?
- Is there usable contact information?
- Does the seller explain any difference between its business name and the company named on the SDS?
- Is this the current applicable revision?
A distributor providing the original manufacturer’s SDS is not automatically a problem. The relationship should simply make sense.
An SDS with a recent revision date also does not establish a recent manufacturing date. Revision dates concern the document.
Most importantly, an SDS communicates product identity and hazards. It is not a laboratory certificate proving that a particular cylinder contains uncontaminated R22.

Evaluate Purity Claims and Batch Reports
Claims such as “high purity,” “premium grade,” or “99.9% pure” need context.
Ask what was measured, which specification was used, and whether the result applies to the material being offered. A composition percentage alone does not answer every question about moisture, acidity, residue, or noncondensable gases.
A useful Certificate of Analysis should identify:
- The product and batch or lot.
- The organization issuing the report.
- The sample or testing date.
- The tested characteristics and measurement units.
- The applicable methods and acceptance limits.
- The results or conformity statement.
- The connection between the tested batch and the shipped cylinder.
A certificate may cover a bulk batch rather than an individually tested cylinder. That can still provide useful evidence if the filling records connect the cylinder to that batch.
If the report carries a laboratory name, verify contact details independently when the purchase risk warrants it. A polished PDF can be copied or altered.

Gas chromatography is one analytical technique, not a complete substitute for every refrigerant quality test. Likewise, a portable refrigerant identifier’s result should be interpreted within the instrument’s capabilities; a screening result does not automatically establish compliance with every purity requirement.
Check the Seller’s Traceability and Written Terms
A credible transaction should have a clearly identified seller and a usable route for resolving discrepancies.
Check the legal or trading name, contact information, product description, quantity, documentation process, and damaged-shipment policy. Save the listing and written answers that influenced the purchase.
Before ordering, a concise request can cover the main questions:
“Please confirm that this product is R22, identify whether it is unused inventory or reclaimed refrigerant, provide the applicable SDS, and explain what batch or quality documentation can be connected to the cylinder shipped. Please also confirm the net refrigerant weight and the procedure for reporting a damaged or mismatched delivery.”

Inspect the Delivery Before Connecting It
Keep the cylinder closed while checking the shipment.
Compare the order confirmation, invoice, carton, and cylinder label. Photograph the product identifier, visible lot information, seal condition, and any damage.
Confirm whether the advertised quantity means net refrigerant weight. The filled cylinder’s gross weight includes the container and may also include packaging.
Look for unexplained relabeling, damaged valve protection, inconsistent identifiers, or a product that differs from the order. Packaging appearance can justify further questions, but it cannot independently prove either authenticity or counterfeiting.
A barcode or QR code is also only as useful as the system behind it. A code opening a generic webpage is not the same as a manufacturer confirming a unique product identifier.
If the cylinder appears damaged or potentially leaking, avoid handling or transporting it unnecessarily. Follow the SDS and obtain instructions from the supplier or appropriate emergency personnel. Do not vent refrigerant or attempt a flame, smell, or improvised pressure test.
When to Pause the Purchase
Resolve discrepancies before payment or use when:
- The title says R22 but the composition describes another product.
- “Virgin” and “reclaimed” are used interchangeably.
- A claimed manufacturing history conflicts with the applicable U.S. servicing-supply restrictions.
- The SDS belongs to an unrelated product with no explanation.
- A purity certificate has no identifiable batch connection.
- The seller cannot identify who is responsible for the product.
- The delivered label does not match the order.
- The seller encourages using another person’s certification improperly.
One missing document does not automatically prove fraud. The important question is whether the seller can explain the product clearly and provide evidence appropriate to its claims.

Can I legally buy R22 online?

Can virgin R22 still be sold?
